READ-A-THON

The Read-A-Thon is coming! One of our oldest traditions, the Read-A-Thon is a school-wide program that combines reading and supporting our school. Students pledge to read and ask friends and family to sponsor them. This is a major source of support for our school. In the past, generous community members have raised thousands of dollars, which we've used to create a bilingual library at our new building! This year, funds raised will support multiple initiatives, from field trips to supplemental learning materials.

When?

Kick-off event: April 25th or 26th

Reading weeks: April 29 through May 10

Wrap up: Week of May 13

Bookfair: May 20th/21st

What can I do to help?

We're so glad you asked! Here are some ways you can help make this event great:

  • Ask local businesses for donations
  • Help create promotional materials to spread the word
  • Prepare to support your child in their reading journey, and think of people to ask for sponsorships!

If you're able to help, or have any questions, contact Joanne Cryer on Konstella, or at joanne.cryer@live.com.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Each newsletter we will highlight an awesome volunteer from our community. It takes a village!

Carlos Da Cruz, along with raising 3rd-grader Kai, has also helped out at a number of our school events. Most recently, he was helping keep anarchy at bay while our kids enjoyed watching the movie Ralph Breaks the Internet at Movie Night in March. We asked Carlos about his experiences at Jie Ming:

What is your favorite thing to experience while volunteering?

The opportunity to be at a school that remains me so much of my own. I so much appreciate the strong parents community supporting our school. And all these interactions that really are a seed that creates strong bonding among our kids.

What keeps you coming back?

The children, the amazing dream of seeing them be prepared to face the world from the many angles of a language that is now theirs, and the opportunity to understand the different aspects of this particular culture through real wonderful teachers.

What is your favorite Jie Ming experience?

As a parent I appreciate seeing our kids grow as new generation of multicultural human beings, as a photographer I appreciate the opportunity to document all this growing through images that tells the story of our school and for new generations to be proud of our school.

Thank you Carlos for sharing your skills and time with us! The Jie Ming community is stronger because of you!

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

Clipping Box Tops is an easy way to earn cash for our school with purchases you already make. Drop off your BoxTops in the marked collection tub on a table in the main entry hallway. Clip those pink Box Tops and send them to school with your student throughout the year, before their expiration date! You can multiply your impact from the same purchases by downloading the free app for Apple or Google.

We have raised $80 in the first 2 months this year. Since our goal is $500, we really would benefit from more parents using the apps to accelerate our earnings without even making any additional purchases. Thanks for helping our 5th graders lead this drive to raise money directly for the end of this school year!

Amazon shopper?

Up to 2% of all your purchases can go to Jie Ming PTA.

  1. Set Jie Ming Mandarin Academy as your charity for smile.amazon.com
  2. Whenever you shop on Amazon, type smile.amazon.com into the browser, and all your purchases will qualify!
