Jie Ming PTA Newsletter
Happy November! I've been enjoying meeting new families in the past few weeks when I've been at the school. It's wonderful to see our community grow!
We have a few exciting things happening in November. I hope you have purchased your tickets to the Silent Auction & Great Gathering (available here) - I'll see you there! Last year was such a special treat, with delicious food and drink, fun conversations around meaningful auction items, and all of it supporting our school.
We will also be gearing up for Minnesota's annual giving day - Give to the Max Day on November 14. I hope you'll join me in spreading the word about the good work we do, to encourage others to give financially to the PTA.
And of course, I hope to see you at our PTA meeting on November 14 as well. (by the way, we are working on test-driving an option for people to attend the meeting remotely! stay tuned)
Start getting those kids bundled up for the cold :)

Great Gathering and Silent Auction
The time is rapidly nearing for our 2nd annual Great Gathering and Silent Auction. Here are your action items:
1. Purchase your tickets today! $15 now, $20 at the door. jie-ming-pta.yapsody.com. Childcare tickets are $10, and are going fast! Kids will have a sitter on-site, with pizza and a movie.
2. We need silent auction items! Visit your favorite restaurant or theater or sports team and donate gift cards or tickets to the auction! We also need baskets and Great Gathering experiences. The more variety, the more fun everyone has at the event, and the more we can support our school. Contact Maggie Mau or Jeremy Johnson on Konstella by Thursday November 7th if you are able to donate something.
3. Visit Midway Liquor or give them a call at 651-644-7900 and purchase wine at 20% off and beer at 10% off to support the wine and beer raffle! Even better - you can leave the wine and beer in the store and we will pick up the day of the event!
4. Sign up for a Volunteer Shift! Many hands make light work! Pick a short shift and enjoy the rest of your evening to help make this event a great success! Peruse the opportunities here

Order Spirit Wear for Winter
Our Spirit Wear store is stocked for winter with great holiday gift ideas for friends and family. Show off your Jie Ming pride with a beanie, sweater, or even mug for hot cocoa. Free shipping on orders over $50. Students can wear spirit wear every Friday.
Are You a PTA Member Yet? We Need You!
Want to help us out a lot, but only have 5 minutes? Become a PTA member! Check out all the reasons and benefits here.
We currently have 31 members out of a school with over 300 families. Membership costs only $10 (easily paid online on Konstella!), enables you to have a voice in the decisions of the PTA, and keeps our PTA strong into the future. Take a moment and join today (last year we had over 50 members, and there are more families at our school now - let's try to get to 70!)
Chinese New Year - still looking for more planning committee members
The Chinese New Year celebration is one of Jie Ming's oldest traditions. With whole-school participation, all the children and staff work super hard for months to put on awesome performances for all of us to enjoy. Click on the image above to view last year's performance. The Chinese New Year Committee puts together the logistics, costumes, program, volunteers, and much more to make this community building event spectacular! We need a large planning team to make it happen. Questions? Ready to dive in? You can join on Konstella or email us at email@example.com.
Thank You Library Volunteers!
We asked and you DELIVERED! Thank you for responding to our call for librarian help last month. More people offered to help than were able to be plugged into our schedule, and there is no better situation than that. Special thanks to the librarians that will be helping on an ongoing basis: Kristen C., A Platt, Michelle Z., Julie M., Kay W., Karina M., Yoko C., and Mollie K.
Reminder: Wear Your Uniform!
At our last PTA meeting, Principal Johnson expressed an ongoing concern of uniform standards slipping among the students. Let's all be part of the solution and ensure our kids are following the uniform guidelines: https://www.spps.org/domain/3973. The uniforms exist to show spirit and respect for our school and to promote a positive learning environment.
Our current uniform is actually very flexible - we don't have to purchase specific sets of clothing from approved uniform vendors. That flexibility may go away if there isn't improvement in adherence to the uniform policy.
This is a recurring section where we highlight volunteers that are making our school and PTA tick. This month we are celebrating Rebecca Tsai, mother of Lydia in Kindergarten. Rebecca is new to Jie Ming (yay Kindergarten families!) and decided to step right up and help out. She co-chaired the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival and was instrumental in the success of that event. Here is what she had to say about her involvement:
What is your favorite thing to experience while volunteering?
When my daughter started kindergarten this year, I knew I wanted to volunteer in some way. So I was excited to learn that volunteers were needed to help plan the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. So far this is my only volunteer experience with Jie Ming, but it was fun and rewarding to see the planning through from start to finish. The best part was seeing the excitement on the faces of all the kids and families enjoying the festival!
What keeps you coming back?
What keeps me coming back as a volunteer is supporting all the kids in the Jie Ming community. My daughter is gaining so much from being a part of Jie Ming, and I'm glad to give back however I can.
What is your favorite Jie Ming experience?
The Moon Festival was so much fun to experience after seeing all that went into the planning. Outside of that experience, seeing how much my daughter learns every day is so exciting. I love to hear the new Chinese phrases and songs she brings home each day.
If you see Rebecca around the school, make sure to thank her! Who will it be next time? Could it be you? If you have a suggested volunteer to highlight, email Adam at firstname.lastname@example.org!
November Meet-Up is Canceled - see you in December!
Enjoy the Thanksgiving weekend! Come hang out at our meetup in December, details to follow.
What / Who is the PTA?
The Parent Teacher Association of Jie Ming is a community of passionate, involved parents and Jie Ming staff that want to make our school even better for our students. The PTA is involved and organizes many things throughout the year:
Events: Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, Chinese New Year performance, Spring Carnival, Meet-ups, Movie Nights
Fundraisers: Fundraiser and Silent Auction, Read-A-Thon, Box Tops for Education
- Classroom grants for materials that the school can't provide
- Volunteer organizing
- Tools for communication and collaboration including our Facebook group, Konstella, website, and regular meetings
- Spirit Wear and branded items
- Health and Wellness Initiatives
- Zero-Waste school initiative
- Promotion of our school
Most importantly, we provide places and opportunities for all families to engage with each other. This helps us work together to find and implement the best solutions for our kids. It takes all of us to make this possible. Thank you for your energy, time, and support!
Support Our School
Box Tops for Education
Clipping Box Tops is an easy way to earn cash for our school with purchases you already make. Drop off your BoxTops in the marked collection tub on a table in the main entry hallway. Clip those pink Box Tops and send them to school with your student throughout the year, before their expiration date! You can multiply your impact from the same purchases by downloading the free app for Apple or Google.
Our school is working hard to be a Zero Waste school. As part of this initiative, our Zero Waste Committee is partnering with Macalester Plymouth United Church on the Compostable Everything program. The PTA provides these materials for free to teachers and for school events.
